Introduction

Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is one of the most important numbers in your academic life. Colleges, universities, scholarships, employers, and graduate programs all use GPA as a quick measure of academic performance. Whether you are a high school student planning college applications or a university student tracking your standing, knowing your GPA helps you set goals and make informed decisions.

This GPA calculator lets you enter each course, its letter grade, and the number of credit hours to instantly compute your weighted GPA on the standard 4.0 scale.

What This Calculator Does

Enter each course you are taking along with the grade you received or expect and the number of credit hours. The calculator weighs each grade by the course's credit value and produces your cumulative GPA.

Inputs Required

  • Letter Grade: The grade you earned in each course (A+, A, B+, B, C, etc.)
  • Credit Hours: The number of credit hours that course is worth
  • Course Name (optional): A label to keep your courses organized

Outputs Provided

  • GPA (4.0 scale): Your overall weighted grade point average
  • Total Credit Hours: The sum of all credit hours entered
  • Total Grade Points: The sum of grade points before averaging
  • Academic Standing Label: An honorary designation such as Cum Laude or Summa Cum Laude

How the Calculation Works

GPA is a weighted average. Each letter grade maps to a grade point value. That value is multiplied by the course's credit hours to produce grade points. All grade points are summed and divided by total credit hours.

GPA = Sum(Grade Points x Credit Hours) / Sum(Credit Hours)

For example, an A in a 3-credit course contributes 4.0 x 3 = 12 grade points. A B+ in a 4-credit course contributes 3.3 x 4 = 13.2 grade points. The standard letter-to-point conversion used is:

  • A+ / A: 4.0
  • A-: 3.7
  • B+: 3.3
  • B: 3.0
  • B-: 2.7
  • C+: 2.3
  • C: 2.0
  • D: 1.0
  • F: 0.0

How to Use the Calculator

  1. Enter the name of each course (optional but helpful for organization)
  2. Select the letter grade you received or expect
  3. Enter the number of credit hours for that course
  4. Add more courses using the Add Course button
  5. Your GPA updates automatically as you enter data

Example Calculation

A student has three courses this semester:

  • English: A (4.0) x 3 credits = 12 grade points
  • Math: B+ (3.3) x 4 credits = 13.2 grade points
  • History: B (3.0) x 3 credits = 9 grade points
  • Total: 34.2 points / 10 credits = GPA of 3.42

Real-World Scenarios

College Applications

A high school senior wants to know if their GPA meets a university's 3.0 minimum requirement. By entering all their course grades and credit values, they can confirm eligibility before submitting applications.

Scholarship Eligibility

A college student tracking a merit scholarship that requires a 3.5 GPA uses the calculator each semester to see how their current grades affect their standing and what grades they need to maintain it.

Academic Planning

A graduate student planning to apply to doctoral programs uses the calculator to simulate the effect of different final exam outcomes on their cumulative GPA, allowing them to prioritize study time for courses that will have the greatest impact.

Why GPA Matters

GPA is used across the academic and professional world as a standardized signal of effort and achievement. Graduate programs and professional schools often set minimum GPA requirements. Employers frequently filter candidates by GPA, especially for competitive entry-level roles. Academic honors such as Dean's List, Cum Laude, and Summa Cum Laude are all determined by GPA thresholds.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Ignoring credit hours: A 1-credit elective affects GPA differently than a 4-credit core course. Always include credit values
  • Confusing weighted and unweighted GPA: High schools sometimes use weighted GPAs (above 4.0 for honors courses). This calculator uses the standard 4.0 unweighted scale
  • Forgetting repeated courses: Some schools replace old grades with retaken course grades. Check your institution's policy before calculating
  • Not accounting for all terms: Cumulative GPA includes every course taken, not just the current semester
