What Is a Ratio?
A ratio is a comparison of two quantities that shows how many times one value contains or is contained within the other. Ratios are written using a colon, such as 3:4, or as a fraction, such as 3/4. How the Calculation Works
Simplifying a Ratio
Simplified Ratio = (a / GCD) : (b / GCD)
To simplify, find the greatest common divisor (GCD) of both values and divide each by it. For example, 12:16 has a GCD of 4, so the simplified ratio is 3:4. The GCD is found using the Euclidean algorithm, which repeatedly divides the larger number by the smaller and takes the remainder until it reaches zero.
Checking Equivalence
a:b = c:d if a/b = c/d (cross-multiplication: a x d = b x c)
Two ratios are equivalent if their cross-products are equal. This is the same principle as comparing simplified fractions. For example, 2:3 and 6:9 are equivalent because 2 x 9 = 18 and 3 x 6 = 18.
Solving a Proportion
If a:b = c:d, then d = (c x b) / a
When three values in a proportion are known, the fourth can be solved by cross-multiplying and isolating the unknown. For example, if 3:4 = 9:d, then d = (9 x 4) / 3 = 12.

- Not simplifying: Leaving a ratio in an unsimplified form like 100:150 makes it harder to interpret than the equivalent 2:3. Simplified ratios are easier to compare and communicate
- Treating ratios as fractions in all contexts: A ratio of 1:2 means 1 part to 2 parts (3 parts total), not that one quantity is half the other unless the context specifies it. In a 1:2 dilution, the concentrate is one-third of the total volume, not one-half
- Division by zero: A ratio with a denominator of zero is undefined. Always ensure the second value in a ratio is greater than zero
- Mixing units: Both values in a ratio should use the same units. Comparing 3 meters to 50 centimeters without converting first gives a meaningless ratio of 3:50 instead of the correct 300:50 = 6:1
