What Is Horsepower?
Horsepower (HP) is a unit of power that measures how much work an engine or motor can perform over time. Originally coined by James Watt in the late 18th century to compare steam engines to draft horses, horsepower is now the standard way to express the output of vehicle engines, electric motors, and industrial equipment worldwide.
One mechanical horsepower equals 550 foot-pounds of work per second, or 33,000 foot-pounds per minute. In metric terms, 1 HP equals approximately 0.7457 kilowatts (kW). Vehicle manufacturers typically rate engine power in HP at a specific RPM, which is why both torque and RPM appear on spec sheets.

How the Calculation Works
Method 1: Torque and RPM
HP = (Torque x RPM) / 5252
The constant 5252 comes from converting RPM to radians per second and accounting for the definition of horsepower. Torque is measured in pound-feet (lb-ft) and represents the rotational force the engine generates. RPM is the engine speed. Together, they define the engine's power output at a given operating point.
Method 2: Force and Velocity
HP = (Force x Velocity) / 550
This method uses the fundamental definition of power: force multiplied by speed. Force is in pounds-force (lbf) and velocity is in feet per second (ft/s). The constant 550 converts these units into horsepower.
