How the Calculation Works

The calculator first annualizes your gross pay by multiplying it by the number of pay periods per year (52 for weekly, 26 for bi-weekly, 24 for semi-monthly, 12 for monthly). Pre-tax deductions are annualized and subtracted from gross income before the standard deduction is applied. Federal income tax is then calculated on the resulting taxable income using 2024 progressive tax brackets. All annual figures are divided back by the number of pay periods to show per-paycheck amounts.

The 2024 standard deductions are $14,600 for single filers, $29,200 for married filing jointly, and $21,900 for head of household. The Social Security wage base is $168,600. Medicare has no wage cap, and an additional 0.9% Medicare surtax applies to earnings over $200,000 for single filers and $250,000 for married filing jointly.
