What This Calculator Does
The average American produces about 16 metric tons of CO2 per year. The global average is 4.7 tons. To avoid the worst effects of climate change, the Paris Agreement calls for per-person emissions of about 2 tons per year by 2050. That is a large gap. This calculator helps you see where your emissions come from and which categories offer the biggest opportunities to cut.
The tool estimates your annual carbon footprint across five categories: driving, home electricity, natural gas heating, air travel, and diet. You enter your annual miles, vehicle fuel efficiency, monthly electricity usage, monthly natural gas consumption, annual flight hours, and diet type. The calculator returns your total footprint in metric tons and pounds of CO2, a breakdown by category, and a comparison against US, EU, and global averages plus the Paris Agreement target.
According to the US EPA, the average US household produces about 8,744 pounds of CO2 per year from electricity alone (assuming 881 kWh per month). The EPA's emission factors come from the eGRID database, which tracks power plant emissions by region. Your actual electricity emissions depend heavily on your state's power mix. Washington state, with abundant hydropower, emits 0.181 lbs CO2 per kWh. West Virginia, which relies on coal, emits 1.597 lbs CO2 per kWh, nearly nine times more.

How the Calculation Works
Each category uses a specific emission factor from EPA and EIA data. The total is the sum of all categories converted to metric tons.
Driving (Gas) = (Annual Miles / MPG) x 19.59 lbs CO2/gallon
Driving (Diesel) = (Annual Miles / MPG) x 22.44 lbs CO2/gallon
Driving (EV) = (Annual Miles / mi per kWh) x Grid Factor (lbs CO2/kWh)
Electricity = Monthly kWh x 12 x Grid Factor
Natural Gas = Monthly therms x 12 x 11.7 lbs CO2/therm
Flights = Annual Hours x 90 lbs CO2/hour
Diet = Diet factor (1.5 to 3.3 metric tons/year)
Total = Sum of all categories / 2204.62 lbs per metric ton
The gasoline emission factor of 19.59 lbs CO2 per gallon comes from the EIA's Carbon Dioxide Emissions Coefficients by Fuel. The electricity factor varies by state based on the EPA eGRID 2022 database, which tracks emissions from every power plant in the United States. The national average is 0.8231 lbs CO2 per kWh (823.1 lbs per MWh). Natural gas produces 11.7 lbs CO2 per therm. Commercial flights produce approximately 90 lbs CO2 per hour of flying per passenger. Diet emissions range from 1.5 metric tons per year for a vegan diet to 3.3 metric tons for a meat-heavy diet, based on life cycle assessment studies.
For a typical American driving 12,000 miles at 25 MPG, using 900 kWh of electricity per month in a state with the national average grid factor, heating with 40 therms of natural gas per month, flying 12 hours per year, and eating an average diet: driving produces 9,403 lbs, electricity produces 8,893 lbs, natural gas produces 5,616 lbs, flights produce 1,080 lbs, and diet produces 5,512 lbs. Total: 30,504 lbs, or about 13.8 metric tons per year. That is below the US average but still nearly 7 times the Paris target.
How to Use the Calculator
- Enter your annual miles driven in a gas or diesel car, along with your MPG and fuel type.
- If you also drive an EV, enter those annual miles and the EV efficiency in miles per kWh.
- Enter your monthly electricity usage in kWh from your electric bill. The US average is 881 kWh per month.
- Select your state to apply the correct grid emission factor. This makes a large difference.
- Enter your monthly natural gas usage in therms from your gas bill. Enter 0 if you do not use natural gas.
- Enter your annual flight hours. A round-trip coast-to-coast flight is about 10 hours.
- Select your diet type. The calculator applies the corresponding annual emission factor.
- Review your total footprint, the category breakdown, and the comparison to global averages.
Example Calculations
Example 1: Suburban Family in Ohio
The Chen family in Columbus, Ohio drives 18,000 miles per year in a Honda CR-V getting 28 MPG on gasoline. They use 1,100 kWh of electricity per month (Ohio grid factor: 1.146 lbs CO2/kWh) and 60 therms of natural gas per month for heating. They fly 8 hours per year and eat an average American diet. Driving: (18,000 / 28) x 19.59 = 12,593 lbs. Electricity: 1,100 x 12 x 1.146 = 15,127 lbs. Natural gas: 60 x 12 x 11.7 = 8,424 lbs. Flights: 8 x 90 = 720 lbs. Diet: 5,512 lbs. Total: 42,376 lbs, or 19.2 metric tons. They are above the US average, largely because of Ohio's coal-heavy electricity grid and high mileage.
Example 2: Urban Professional in California
Maya in San Francisco drives 6,000 miles per year in a Prius getting 50 MPG. She uses 400 kWh of electricity per month (California grid factor: 0.209 lbs CO2/kWh, one of the cleanest in the nation) and no natural gas. She flies 30 hours per year for work and eats a vegetarian diet. Driving: (6,000 / 50) x 19.59 = 2,351 lbs. Electricity: 400 x 12 x 0.209 = 1,003 lbs. Flights: 30 x 90 = 2,700 lbs. Diet: 3,748 lbs. Total: 9,802 lbs, or 4.4 metric tons. She is below the global average, helped by California's clean grid and her vegetarian diet, though her frequent flying adds significantly.
Real World Scenarios
Switching from Gas Car to EV in West Virginia
Derek in West Virginia drives 15,000 miles per year. He currently drives a 22 MPG gas SUV. His driving emissions: (15,000 / 22) x 19.59 = 13,357 lbs CO2. If he switches to an EV at 3.2 mi/kWh, his EV emissions would be (15,000 / 3.2) x 1.597 = 7,486 lbs CO2. That is a 44% reduction. The Impact of a Single Transatlantic Flight
A round-trip flight from New York to London is about 14 hours of flying. At 90 lbs CO2 per hour, that single trip produces 1,260 lbs of CO2, or 0.57 metric tons. For someone who otherwise produces 10 metric tons per year, one transatlantic round trip adds nearly 6% to their annual footprint. A family of four taking that same trip produces 2.28 metric tons, more than many people in developing nations produce in an entire year. Diet Change: Meat-Heavy to Vegan
A meat-heavy diet produces about 3.3 metric tons of CO2 per year. A vegan diet produces about 1.5 metric tons. The difference is 1.8 metric tons per year, or 3,969 lbs of CO2. That is equivalent to driving about 5,000 miles in a 25 MPG car. For context, the average American drives about 12,000 miles per year, producing about 9,400 lbs of CO2. Switching from a meat-heavy diet to vegan saves roughly 42% as much CO2 as eliminating all driving. Diet is one of the most impactful personal choices for carbon reduction.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using the national average grid factor: Electricity emissions vary by a factor of 9 across states. West Virginia emits 1.597 lbs CO2/kWh while Washington emits 0.181. Always select your actual state for an accurate estimate. If you buy green power or have solar panels, your effective emission factor may be even lower.
- Forgetting about upstream emissions: This calculator uses tailpipe and power plant emission factors. It does not include the full life cycle emissions of extracting, refining, and transporting fuel, or manufacturing your vehicle. Life cycle emissions can add 20 to 30% to the total.
- Underestimating flight emissions: Flying is extremely carbon-intensive. A single round-trip transatlantic flight can produce more CO2 than months of driving. Many people who consider themselves environmentally conscious overlook their air travel. Be honest about your flight hours.
- Counting EV miles as zero emissions: EVs produce no tailpipe emissions, but the electricity to charge them comes from the grid. In a coal-heavy state, an EV may produce only 40% less CO2 than a gas car, not 100% less. Always account for the grid emission factor.
Limitations of This Calculator
This tool provides an estimate based on national and state-level emission factors. It does not account for upstream fuel life cycle emissions, vehicle manufacturing, food transportation, consumption of goods and services, or waste. The EPA estimates that these additional categories can add 30 to 50% to a typical household footprint. The diet emission factors are averages from life cycle assessment studies and may vary based on specific food choices, local sourcing, and food waste. The flight emission factor is a rough average and does not account for flight distance, aircraft type, or class of service (business class emits roughly 2 to 3 times more per passenger).
