How the Calculation Works
WHR = Waist Circumference / Hip Circumference
The ratio is simple: divide your waist measurement by your hip measurement. Both measurements must be in the same unit (inches or centimeters). The ratio itself is unitless. A WHR of 0.85 means your waist is 85% of your hip circumference.

- For hip: Measure at the widest point of your buttocks. Keep the tape parallel to the floor.
- Measure after exhaling normally. Do not suck in your stomach.
- Take the measurement against bare skin or thin clothing for accuracy.
- Repeat twice and use the average if measurements vary by more than 0.25 inches.

Robert is a 52-year-old man with a 40-inch waist and 38-inch hips. He carries most of his weight around his midsection.
