What Is a Waist-to-Height Ratio Calculator?
A waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) calculator divides your waist circumference by your height. The result tells you whether your waist is less than half your height, a simple boundary that researchers use to flag abdominal fat and the health risks that come with it. Unlike BMI, which only uses weight and height, WHtR accounts for where you store fat. People who carry weight around the middle have higher cardiometabolic risk than people who carry it on the hips, even at the same BMI.
The metric is sometimes called the "keep your waist circumference to less than half your height" rule, coined by Dr. Margaret Ashwell. The rule is easy to remember and works across age, sex, and ethnic groups. How the Calculation Works
The formula is straightforward:
WHtR = Waist Circumference / Height
Both measurements must be in the same unit. If your waist is 34 inches and your height is 69 inches, your WHtR is 34 / 69 = 0.49. The same calculation works in centimeters: an 86 cm waist divided by 175 cm height gives 0.49. The result is a unitless ratio, which is why the same thresholds apply whether you measure in inches or centimeters.
The boundary most people care about is 0.50. Anything below 0.50 is considered low risk. Between 0.50 and 0.59 the risk increases, and at 0.60 or above the risk is high. A ratio below 0.40 can indicate underweight or insufficient body mass, particularly relevant for older adults where low body mass is linked to frailty and bone fractures.

How to Use the Calculator
- Choose imperial (inches) or metric (centimeters).
- Enter your waist circumference. Measure at the narrowest point of your torso, usually just above the belly button, after a normal exhale. Do not suck in your stomach.
- Enter your total height without shoes.
- Your ratio, category, and the 0.5 boundary for your height appear on the right.
- Use the boundary value as a target. If your waist is above it, even a small reduction lowers your risk.

The "Normal Weight" but High Risk Case
Tom, a 38-year-old software engineer, is 6 foot 1 and weighs 178 pounds. His BMI is 23.5, squarely in the normal range. But he has a sedentary job and carries most of his fat around his middle. His waist is 39 inches. His WHtR is 39 / 73 = 0.53, putting him in the overweight risk band. His doctor ran bloodwork and found elevated triglycerides and a fasting glucose of 104 mg/dL, both signs of insulin resistance. Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Measuring waist at the wrong point: The waist is the narrowest part of the torso, usually around the belly button or just above it. Measuring at the hips or below the belly button understates the ratio. Use a soft tape held parallel to the floor, against bare skin, after a normal exhale.
- Sucking in your stomach: It is tempting to pull your stomach in when measuring. This gives a falsely low number. Relax and breathe normally. If anything, measure at the end of a relaxed exhale.
- Assuming the same waist target works for everyone: The 0.5 rule scales with height. A 5 foot 2 person has a boundary of 31 inches, while a 6 foot 2 person has a boundary of 37 inches. Comparing your waist to a friend's without accounting for height is misleading. This is exactly what WHtR corrects for.
- Ignoring the underweight band: Most attention goes to ratios above 0.50, but a ratio below 0.40 can also be a problem, especially in older adults.
