How the Calculation Works
Coffee (g) = Water (g) / Ratio
Water (g) = Coffee (g) x Ratio
Ratio = Water / Coffee (e.g. 1:16 means 16 g water per 1 g coffee)
A brew ratio expresses how many grams of water you use per gram of coffee. A 1:16 ratio means 16 grams of water for every 1 gram of coffee. If you have 350 ml of water and a 1:16 ratio, you need 350 / 16 = 21.9 grams of coffee. If you have 22 grams of coffee and want a 1:16 ratio, you need 22 x 16 = 352 ml of water. The calculator handles all three directions automatically.
The SCA standard of 55 g per liter works out to 1000 / 55 = 18.18, which is why the drip preset uses 1:18. Pour-over at 1:16 is slightly stronger. Espresso is a different beast entirely, using a 1:2 ratio where 18 grams of coffee yields about 36 grams of liquid in 25 to 30 seconds.

Limitations of This Calculator
This tool calculates coffee and water amounts from a brew ratio. It does not account for grind size, brew time, water chemistry, or bean density, all of which affect the final taste. The SCA notes that water with a TDS between 75 and 250 mg/L and a calcium hardness around 68 mg/L produces the best extraction, but this calculator does not evaluate your water.
