What Is Gas Mileage?

Gas mileage, measured in miles per gallon (MPG), tells you how far your vehicle travels on one gallon of fuel. A higher MPG means better fuel efficiency, lower running costs, and fewer trips to the gas station. Knowing your real-world MPG is essential for accurate budgeting and deciding when to service or replace a vehicle.

Manufacturer-rated MPG figures are measured under controlled conditions. Your actual gas mileage depends on driving habits, road type, vehicle load, tire pressure, and weather. This calculator uses real odometer data to give you an accurate measurement of your actual fuel efficiency.

What This Calculator Does

Enter your starting odometer reading, ending odometer reading, and the number of gallons added at fill-up. Optionally include the price per gallon to see your total fill-up cost and cost per mile.

  • Inputs: Start odometer, end odometer, gallons used, price per gallon (optional)
  • Outputs: MPG, miles driven, total fuel cost, cost per mile

How the Calculation Works

Miles Driven = End Odometer - Start Odometer

MPG = Miles Driven / Gallons Used

Subtract the starting odometer reading from the ending reading to get the miles driven since your last fill-up. Divide that number by the gallons pumped to get your MPG. This method gives a precise real-world efficiency figure based on your actual driving.

How to Use the Calculator

  1. Fill your tank completely and note the odometer reading (this is your start reading)
  2. Drive normally until your next fill-up
  3. Fill the tank again and note the new odometer reading (end reading)
  4. Enter both odometer values and the gallons pumped at this fill-up
  5. Optionally enter the price per gallon to see your cost per mile

Example Calculations

Example 1: Typical Sedan

Start: 22,000 miles. End: 22,380 miles. Gallons pumped: 12.5. Miles driven: 380. MPG: 380 / 12.5 = 30.4 MPG. At $3.50 per gallon, the fill-up cost $43.75, or $0.115 per mile.

Example 2: SUV on Highway

Start: 45,100 miles. End: 45,520 miles. Gallons pumped: 16.8. Miles driven: 420. MPG: 420 / 16.8 = 25 MPG. At $4.00 per gallon, the fill-up cost $67.20, or $0.16 per mile.

Real-World Scenarios

Monitoring Vehicle Health

A sudden drop in MPG can indicate an engine problem, dirty air filter, underinflated tires, or a failing oxygen sensor. Tracking your MPG over time helps catch maintenance issues early before they become costly repairs.

Comparing New vs. Old Vehicles

If your current car averages 22 MPG and a new model averages 35 MPG, calculate annual savings: at 15,000 miles and $3.50 per gallon, you would save approximately $1,225 per year in fuel costs alone.

Tracking Driving Habits

Aggressive acceleration and hard braking can reduce fuel efficiency by 15 to 30 percent. By recording MPG after each fill-up, you can measure whether smoother driving habits are actually saving you money.

Why This Calculation Matters

Real-world MPG is always more useful than manufacturer estimates. It tells you what your vehicle actually costs to operate, helps you spot mechanical issues, and lets you compare the true efficiency of different driving styles or routes.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Partial fill-ups: Always start from a completely full tank for an accurate reading. Partial fills introduce error into the calculation
  • Reading the pump wrong: Use the total gallons dispensed, not the dollar amount, for this calculation
  • Mixing highway and city data: For the most useful data, track city and highway miles separately if your driving varies significantly
  • One-fill conclusions: A single fill-up can be skewed by unusual driving. Average three to five consecutive fill-ups for a reliable MPG figure
