What Is a Height Calculator?
A height calculator converts measurements between the metric system (centimeters and meters) and the imperial system (feet and inches). Whether you are filling out a medical form, shopping for clothing online, or comparing height data from different countries, having the right unit is essential.
Most of the world uses centimeters, while the United States and a handful of other countries use feet and inches. This tool makes the conversion instant and accurate in both directions.
What This Calculator Does
This calculator converts height values between centimeters, meters, feet, and inches. It works in two modes:
- cm to ft and in: Enter a height in centimeters and get feet, inches, meters, and millimeters
- ft and in to cm: Enter feet and inches and get centimeters and meters
How the Calculation Works
Centimeters to Feet and Inches
Total inches = cm / 2.54
Feet = floor(total inches / 12)
Remaining inches = total inches mod 12
One inch equals exactly 2.54 centimeters. To convert 175 cm: 175 / 2.54 = 68.9 inches. Dividing by 12 gives 5 feet with 8.9 inches remaining, so 175 cm equals 5 feet 8.9 inches.
Feet and Inches to Centimeters
Total inches = (feet × 12) + inches
cm = total inches × 2.54
To convert 6 feet 2 inches: (6 × 12) + 2 = 74 inches. Then 74 × 2.54 = 187.96 cm.
How to Use the Calculator
- Select the conversion direction using the toggle at the top
- Enter your height value in the input field
- The result appears instantly with all equivalent units displayed
- Switch modes at any time to convert in the opposite direction
Example Calculations
Example 1: 180 cm to feet and inches
180 / 2.54 = 70.87 inches. 70.87 / 12 = 5 feet 10.87 inches. So 180 cm equals approximately 5 feet 11 inches.
Example 2: 5 feet 9 inches to cm
(5 × 12) + 9 = 69 inches. 69 × 2.54 = 175.26 cm. So 5 feet 9 inches equals approximately 175 cm.
Real-World Scenarios
Medical and Health Records
Healthcare providers in different countries record height in different units. A patient visiting a US clinic who knows their height in centimeters can use this tool to quickly provide the correct value in feet and inches.
Online Shopping and Sizing
Clothing and furniture size guides often list measurements in one system. Converting your height ensures you select the correct size when shopping internationally.
Sports and Athletics
Athlete profiles, scouting reports, and sports statistics use both systems depending on the sport and country. A basketball player listed at 6 feet 7 inches is 200.7 cm tall.
Why This Calculation Matters
Height is used in dozens of calculations including BMI, ideal weight, medication dosing, and ergonomic assessments. Using the wrong unit can lead to errors in these downstream calculations. Accurate conversion is a small step that prevents larger mistakes.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Confusing meters and centimeters: 1.75 m and 175 cm are the same height. Entering 1.75 in the centimeter field gives the wrong result
- Treating feet as a decimal: 5.9 feet is not 5 feet 9 inches. It is 5 feet and 0.9 × 12 = 10.8 inches, which equals about 5 feet 10.8 inches
- Rounding too early: Rounding intermediate steps introduces error. This calculator carries full precision through the calculation
