How the Conversion Works
The calculator first converts the input to meters per second, the SI base unit, then divides by the target unit's m/s factor. One meter per second is 3.6 kilometers per hour and 2.23694 miles per hour. One mile per hour is exactly 0.44704 meters per second, a definition set by the 1959 yard and pound agreement. One knot is exactly 1,852 divided by 3,600 meters per second, or about 0.514444 m/s, because a nautical mile is defined as exactly 1,852 meters.
For example, converting 100 km/h to mph: 100 times (1,000 / 3,600) equals 27.778 m/s. Dividing by 0.44704 gives 62.137 mph. That is why a 100 km/h European speed limit is roughly 62 mph. Converting 30 knots to km/h: 30 times 0.514444 equals 15.433 m/s, times 3.6 gives 55.56 km/h.

Using the converter, 85 mph equals 85 times 0.44704 = 37.998 m/s, or about 38 m/s. The two drones have essentially the same top speed, just expressed in different units. Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Confusing statute miles and nautical miles: A knot is a nautical mile per hour (1,852 meters), not a statute mile per hour (1,609.344 meters). One knot equals 1.15078 mph, not 1 mph. Mixing them up introduces a 15% error, which is significant in navigation and flight planning.
- Treating mach as a fixed speed: Mach 1 is the speed of sound, which varies with air temperature and altitude. At sea level and 15 degrees C, it is about 340.29 m/s (761 mph). At 35,000 feet where airliners cruise, the air is colder and mach 1 drops to about 295 m/s (660 mph). This converter uses the sea-level value as a reference. - Mixing up speed and pace: Speed is distance per time (km/h, mph). Pace is time per distance (minutes per km, minutes per mile). They are reciprocals, not the same. A 5 min/km pace is 12 km/h speed. A 6 min/mile pace is 10 mph. This converter handles speed only.
- Forgetting km/h to m/s divides by 3.6: To convert km/h to m/s, divide by 3.6 (or multiply by 0.2778). To convert m/s to km/h, multiply by 3.6. A common error is multiplying by 3.6 in both directions, which gives a result 12.96 times too large. The factor 3.6 comes from 3,600 seconds per hour divided by 1,000 meters per kilometer.
