What Is the Cooper Test?
The Cooper 12-minute run test is a field test of aerobic fitness. You run as far as possible in exactly 12 minutes on a flat surface, and the distance you cover is used to estimate your VO2 max, which is the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during intense exercise. Dr. Kenneth H. Cooper developed the test in 1968 for the United States Air Force as a quick, low-cost alternative to laboratory treadmill testing. It requires nothing more than a track or measured course and a stopwatch.
VO2 max is measured in milliliters of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute (ml/kg/min). It is the gold standard for cardiovascular fitness. A 2018 study published in JAMA Network Open by Mandsager et al. found that VO2 max is one of the strongest single predictors of long-term cardiovascular and all-cause mortality, comparable to or stronger than smoking, hypertension, and diabetes. The Cooper Formula
Cooper's original regression equation converts the distance covered in 12 minutes into an estimated VO2 max:
For example, if you run 2,400 meters in 12 minutes, your estimated VO2 max is (2400 - 504.9) / 44.73 = 42.4 ml/kg/min. If you run 2,800 meters, your VO2 max is about 51.3. The constants 504.9 and 44.73 come from Cooper's original validation study, which compared the 12-minute run distance to treadmill VO2 max measurements in Air Force trainees.
The estimate has roughly 10% error compared to laboratory gas-analysis testing. That is accurate enough for tracking your fitness over time and comparing yourself to population norms, but it is not precise enough for elite training prescription. For a more precise measurement, you would need a graded exercise test with metabolic cart analysis in a sports science lab.
How to Run the Cooper Test
- Find a flat, measured course. A standard 400-meter running track is ideal because you can count laps to get an exact distance.
- Warm up for 10 to 15 minutes with easy jogging and a few short strides.
- Start a stopwatch and run as far as you can in exactly 12 minutes. Pace yourself so that you are working hard but not sprinting at the start and fading later.
- When 12 minutes are up, mark your position and calculate the total distance. On a track, count full laps (400m each) and estimate the partial final lap.
