What This Calculator Does
The current ratio and quick ratio are the two standard measures of short-term liquidity. They answer a simple question: can you pay your bills due in the next 12 months with the assets you can convert to cash in that same window? This calculator takes your balance sheet inputs and computes both ratios together, plus working capital, so you can see your liquidity position at a glance. A current ratio of 1.5 means you have $1.50 in current assets for every $1.00 in current liabilities. A quick ratio of 1.0 means your most liquid assets exactly cover your short-term obligations.

How the Calculation Works

Working Capital = Current Assets - Current Liabilities
The current ratio includes every asset that could become cash within a year. The quick ratio is stricter. It keeps only the assets you can convert to cash fast, usually within 30 to 60 days. Inventory is excluded because it has to be sold first, and selling it may require discounting or may simply take too long. Prepaid expenses are excluded because they are payments for future services, not cash you can get back.
A ratio of 1.0 means assets exactly equal liabilities. Above 1.0 means you have a cushion. Below 1.0 means you cannot cover short-term obligations with short-term assets, which is a warning sign. But the right ratio depends on your industry. Retailers operate comfortably below 1.5 because they sell inventory quickly and suppliers extend payment terms. Manufacturers need higher ratios because inventory moves slower and supply chains are longer.

Example Calculations
Example 1: Manufacturing Company
A manufacturer has $80,000 in cash, $30,000 in securities, $150,000 in receivables, $200,000 in inventory, and $20,000 in prepaid expenses. Current liabilities are $220,000. Current assets total $480,000. Current ratio is $480K / $220K = 2.18. Quick assets are $260,000. Quick ratio is $260K / $220K = 1.18. Working capital is $260,000. The current ratio is above the manufacturing median of about 1.9, and the quick ratio is above the sector median near 1.0. This company has solid liquidity.
Example 2: Retail Store
A retail store has $40,000 in cash, $5,000 in securities, $20,000 in receivables, $180,000 in inventory, and $5,000 in prepaid expenses. Current liabilities are $190,000. Current assets total $250,000. Current ratio is $250K / $190K = 1.32. Quick assets are $65,000. Quick ratio is $65K / $190K = 0.34. Working capital is $60,000. The current ratio is in the healthy range for retail (median around 1.3), but the quick ratio of 0.34 is below the retail median of about 0.5. This is normal for retail, where most current assets are inventory, but it means the store depends on selling stock to pay its bills.

Applying for a Bank Loan
A construction company applies for a $500,000 line of credit. The bank wants to see a current ratio above 1.2, which is typical for surety bonding and construction lending. The company has $300,000 in current assets and $240,000 in current liabilities, a ratio of 1.25. It clears the threshold but barely. Common Mistakes to Avoid

It does not age receivables, adjust for doubtful accounts, or distinguish between inventory that will sell in 30 days and inventory that has not moved in a year. It treats all current assets as equally convertible, which overstates liquidity for businesses with slow-paying customers or obsolete stock. The industry benchmarks shown are 2026 medians drawn from public company data and may not match private company results in your specific niche.
