How the Calculation Works
Deck boards are calculated by dividing the deck width in inches by the board pitch (actual board width plus 0.25 inch gap), then applying the waste factor. Joist count is ceil(deckLength times 12 / joistSpacing) + 1, where joist spacing depends on decking type and orientation. Posts are estimated at 6 ft spacing along both sides. Concrete is calculated from cylindrical footing volume (12 inch diameter, 8 inch deep) and converted to 80 lb bags. Screws are estimated at 3.5 per square foot.

How to Use the Calculator

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using wrong joist spacing for diagonal patterns: Diagonal decking (45 degrees) requires tighter joist spacing because the boards cross the joists at an angle, reducing the effective span. The calculator automatically adjusts spacing for diagonal patterns, but if you are planning manually, remember to reduce spacing from 16 to 12 inches for 5/4 and composite, and from 24 to 16 inches for 2x6.
- Underestimating waste on diagonal patterns: Diagonal decking generates more waste because boards are cut at 45 degrees at both ends. Use 15% waste for diagonal patterns instead of the standard 10%. For complex shapes with notches or curves, use 20% or more.
- Not checking joist span limits: The calculator lets you choose any joist size, but the joist span is limited by the joist size and wood species. A 2x6 joist can only span about 9 to 10 ft, while a 2x10 can span 13 to 16 ft depending on species and grade. Check the IRC span tables before selecting a joist size.
- Forgetting stairs, railing, and fascia: The calculator estimates deck boards, joists, posts, concrete, and screws only. Joist span, post spacing, beam size, footing depth, and railing requirements depend on your local building code and the 2024 International Residential Code (IRC). The post estimate assumes 6 ft spacing along both sides, which may not match your structural design. The concrete estimate assumes 12 inch diameter footings at 8 inch depth, which may need to be deeper in frost zones. The screw estimate assumes face-screwed installation at 3.5 screws per sq ft.
