What Is a Drywall Calculator?
A drywall calculator estimates the number of drywall sheets, screws, joint compound, and tape needed to cover a room. It takes room dimensions, door and window counts, sheet size, and a waste factor, then computes the total surface area and converts it into material quantities. How the Calculation Works
The wall area formula is 2 times (length + width) times height. Each standard door is assumed to be 21 sq ft (3 ft by 7 ft), and each standard window is 12 sq ft. The ceiling area is length times width. The total area is multiplied by (1 + waste / 100) to account for cuts and breakage. Sheets are calculated by dividing the area with waste by the sheet square footage and rounding up.

- Wall area: 2 times (12 + 14) times 8 = 416 sq ft
- Subtract openings: 416 - 21 - 24 = 371 sq ft
- Add ceiling: 371 + 168 = 539 sq ft
- With 10% waste: 539 times 1.10 = 593 sq ft
- Sheets needed: ceil(593 / 32) = 19 sheets
- Screws: 19 times 32 = 608 screws

Example 2: Living Room with Tall Ceilings
A contractor is drywalling a 20 by 22 ft living room with 10 ft ceilings, 2 doors, 4 windows, using 4x10 sheets with 12% waste and including the ceiling.
- Wall area: 2 times (20 + 22) times 10 = 840 sq ft
- Subtract openings: 840 - 42 - 48 = 750 sq ft
- Add ceiling: 750 + 440 = 1,190 sq ft
- With 12% waste: 1,190 times 1.12 = 1,333 sq ft
- Sheets needed: ceil(1,333 / 40) = 34 sheets
- Screws: 34 times 32 = 1,088 screws
- Joint compound: 1,190 / 200 = 5.95 gallons (2 buckets)

Basement Renovation with Moisture Concerns
Sarah is finishing a 24 by 30 ft basement with 8 ft ceilings. The space has 2 egress windows and 1 door. She plans to use 4x8 sheets but is concerned about moisture. Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Underestimating the waste factor: A 10% waste factor is standard, but rooms with many corners, angled ceilings, or obstructions may need 15% or more. Running out of sheets mid-project means another trip to the store, and dye lots can vary slightly between batches.
- Forgetting the ceiling: Many DIYers calculate only the walls and forget the ceiling. A 12 by 14 ft ceiling adds 168 sq ft, which is 5 to 6 extra sheets. Always confirm whether the ceiling is included before ordering.
- Using the wrong sheet size for ceiling height: If you have 9 ft ceilings and buy 4x8 sheets, you will have a 1 ft horizontal strip that needs to be filled with offcuts, creating extra seams and more taping work. Using 4x9 sheets for 9 ft ceilings eliminates this waste.
- Not accounting for garage doors or large openings: The calculator subtracts standard doors (21 sq ft) and windows (12 sq ft). A garage door is much larger, typically 7 by 8 ft (56 sq ft) or 8 by 8 ft (64 sq ft). Count it as 3 standard doors or adjust your dimensions to exclude the garage door area.

This calculator uses standard door (21 sq ft) and window (12 sq ft) sizes. If your doors or windows are significantly different, the area estimate will be off. The screw count assumes 32 screws per 4x8 sheet (every 12 inches on studs 16 inches on center), which is a common estimate but varies with fastener schedule and local code. Joint compound and tape estimates are rough industry averages and vary with the finisher's skill level and the desired finish level. The calculator does not account for corner beads, which add about 1 foot of bead per linear foot of outside corner.
