How the Calculation Works
The Gregorian calendar uses three rules to determine leap years. A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4. However, if it is also divisible by 100, it is not a leap year, unless it is also divisible by 400, in which case it is a leap year again.
Rule 1: If year % 4 == 0, go to Rule 2 (else: not a leap year)
Rule 2: If year % 100 == 0, go to Rule 3 (else: leap year)
Rule 3: If year % 400 == 0, leap year (else: not a leap year)
In code, this is expressed as: (year % 4 === 0 && year % 100 !== 0) || year % 400 === 0. The three-rule system corrects for the fact that a simple "divisible by 4" rule overcounts leap years by about 3 days every 400 years. The century rule removes 3 leap years every 400 years, keeping the calendar accurate to within one day per 3,300 years.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Assuming all years divisible by 4 are leap years: Century years (divisible by 100) are not leap years unless they are also divisible by 400. The year 1900 was not a leap year, and 2100 will not be either. Only 1600 and 2000 were leap years among recent century years.
- Forgetting the 400-year rule: The year 2000 was a leap year because it is divisible by 400. Many people incorrectly assume it was not, because they only know the "divisible by 4" and "divisible by 100" rules. The 400-year exception is what made 2000 a leap year.
