How the Calculation Works
The ISO 8601 week number is calculated by first finding the Thursday of the current week. This is done by adjusting the date forward or backward based on the current day of the week. The year of that Thursday is the ISO week year. The week number is then the ordinal week of that Thursday within its year.

The key rule is that week 1 is the week with the year's first Thursday. This means if January 1 is a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, it belongs to week 52 or 53 of the previous year. For example, January 1, 2026, is a Thursday, so it falls in ISO week 1 of 2026. But January 1, 2027, is a Friday, so it falls in ISO week 53 of 2026.
