What Is a Sod Calculator?
A sod calculator estimates how many pallets and pieces of sod you need to cover a lawn area, plus the material and installation cost. It takes the lawn dimensions, grass type, waste factor, and installation preference, then computes the total area, pallet count, piece count, and cost estimate. What This Calculator Does
The calculator multiplies lawn length by width to get the area, applies a waste factor, and divides by the coverage per pallet (450 sq ft) and per piece (2.25 sq ft) to determine quantities. It then multiplies the area by the grass type's price per square foot to estimate material cost, and optionally adds installation cost at $1.50 per sq ft.

How the Calculation Works
The area is length times width. The area with waste is area times (1 + waste / 100). Pallets are ceil(areaWithWaste / 450). Pieces are ceil(areaWithWaste / 2.25). Material cost is areaWithWaste times pricePerSqft. Installation cost is area times 1.50 if selected.

- Not measuring irregular shapes accurately: If your lawn is not a perfect rectangle, break it into smaller rectangles and calculate each separately. A curved or angled lawn can have 10 to 20% more or less area than a rough rectangular estimate. Use the waste factor to account for cutting sod around curves and obstacles.
