Everyday Conversions: Height, Shoe Size, Dog Age, and Unit Conversions
Learn how to convert height between feet and centimeters, find your international shoe size, calculate your dog's age in human years using the AKC formula, and convert any unit.

You are shopping for shoes online from a European retailer. You wear a size 10 in the U.S. The site uses EU sizing. What size do you order? If you guessed 43, you are close but wrong. The correct answer is 44. A wrong guess means a return shipment and a two-week delay.
Everyday conversions are the math we use without thinking. Height in feet and inches versus centimeters. Shoe sizes across U.S., U.K., EU, and Japanese systems. Dog years to human years (the old "multiply by 7" rule is wrong). Cooking measurements between metric and imperial. These conversions seem trivial until you get them wrong and end up with ill-fitting shoes, a confused veterinarian, or a ruined recipe.
This guide covers the four most common everyday conversions with the exact formulas, 2026 standards, and real-world examples.
Height Conversion: Feet/Inches to Centimeters
The U.S., Liberia, and Myanmar are the only countries that primarily use feet and inches for height. The rest of the world uses centimeters.
The Conversion
1 inch = 2.54 centimeters (exact) 1 foot = 12 inches = 30.48 centimeters
To convert feet and inches to centimeters:
- Convert feet to inches: feet x 12 + inches = total inches
- Multiply by 2.54: total inches x 2.54 = centimeters
Example
Height: 5 feet 10 inches Total inches: 5 x 12 + 10 = 70 inches Centimeters: 70 x 2.54 = 177.8 cm
Reverse: Centimeters to Feet and Inches
- Divide centimeters by 2.54 to get total inches
- Divide total inches by 12 to get feet (whole number)
- Remainder is inches
Example: 180 cm Total inches: 180 / 2.54 = 70.87 inches Feet: 70.87 / 12 = 5.91 = 5 feet Inches: 0.91 x 12 = 10.9 = approximately 11 inches So 180 cm = 5 feet 11 inches

Shoe Size Conversion
Shoe sizing is notoriously inconsistent across regions. There is no single international standard. The most commonly used systems are U.S., U.K., EU, and Japanese.
Men's Shoe Size Conversion
| U.S. | U.K. | EU | Japan (cm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | 6 | 40 | 25.0 |
| 8 | 7 | 41 | 26.0 |
| 9 | 8 | 42 | 27.0 |
| 10 | 9 | 44 | 28.0 |
| 11 | 10 | 45 | 29.0 |
| 12 | 11 | 46 | 30.0 |
| 13 | 12 | 47 | 31.0 |
Women's Shoe Size Conversion
| U.S. | U.K. | EU | Japan (cm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 4 | 39 | 23.5 |
| 7 | 5 | 40 | 24.5 |
| 8 | 6 | 41 | 25.5 |
| 9 | 7 | 42 | 26.5 |
| 10 | 8 | 43 | 27.5 |
| 11 | 9 | 44 | 28.5 |
Conversion Formulas (Approximate)
U.S. Men's to EU: EU = (U.S. + 1) x 1.2 + 32 (approximately) U.S. Women's to EU: EU = (U.S. + 2) x 1.2 + 32 (approximately) U.S. to U.K.: U.K. = U.S. - 1 (men), U.K. = U.S. - 2 (women) U.S. to cm (foot length): cm = (U.S. men's + 1) x 0.833 x 2.54 + 21.6
These formulas are approximate. Sizing varies by brand, shoe type, and manufacturer. Always check the brand's size chart when possible.
Important Notes
- EU sizing is not truly standardized. A size 43 in Nike may differ from a size 43 in Adidas
- Japanese sizing is the most reliable because it is based on foot length in centimeters
- Width also matters: U.S. widths go from AAA (narrowest) to EEE (widest), with D being standard
- Athletic shoes often run small. Consider going up a half size from your dress shoe size

Dog Age Calculator: The Modern Formula
The old rule of "one dog year equals seven human years" is scientifically wrong. Dogs mature much faster than humans in their first two years, and aging speed depends heavily on breed size.
The AKC/AVMA Size-Adjusted Formula
The American Kennel Club and American Veterinary Medical Association recommend a size-adjusted approach:
- Year 1: 15 human years (all sizes)
- Year 2: Add 9 human years (cumulative: 24, all sizes)
- Years 3+: Add 4 to 7 human years per dog year, depending on size
| Dog Age | Toy/Small (under 20 lbs) | Medium (20-50 lbs) | Large (50-90 lbs) | Giant (over 90 lbs) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 15 | 15 | 15 | 15 |
| 2 | 24 | 24 | 24 | 24 |
| 3 | 28 | 29 | 30 | 31 |
| 5 | 36 | 39 | 42 | 45 |
| 7 | 44 | 49 | 54 | 59 |
| 10 | 56 | 64 | 72 | 80 |
| 12 | 64 | 74 | 84 | 94 |
| 15 | 76 | 87 | 102 | 115 |

The UCSD Epigenetic Formula
In 2020, Wang et al. at UC San Diego published a study in Cell Systems using DNA methylation patterns to derive a molecular aging formula:
Human Age = 16 x ln(dog age) + 31
This formula is based on Labrador Retrievers and aligns dog and human aging at the molecular level. It is the most biologically accurate formula but is breed-specific to Labradors.
Example: A 6-year-old Labrador: Human age = 16 x ln(6) + 31 = 16 x 1.792 + 31 = 28.67 + 31 = 59.7
The AKC table gives 48 for a 6-year-old large breed. The epigenetic formula gives 60. The difference reflects different aging models. The AKC table is more practical for owners; the epigenetic formula is more scientifically precise.
Why the 7x Rule Is Wrong
A 1-year-old dog is sexually mature and fully grown, comparable to a 15-year-old human, not a 7-year-old child. A 2-year-old dog is comparable to a 24-year-old human. The 7x rule underestimates aging in the first two years and overestimates it in later years for small breeds.
Senior Thresholds by Size
| Size | Senior Age | Average Lifespan |
|---|---|---|
| Small (under 20 lbs) | 11 years | 13-18 years |
| Medium (20-50 lbs) | 9 years | 12-15 years |
| Large (50-90 lbs) | 8 years | 10-13 years |
| Giant (over 90 lbs) | 7 years | 7-10 years |
Large and giant breeds age faster and have shorter lifespans. A Great Dane is senior at 6. A Chihuahua may not reach senior status until 10 or 11.

Real-World Scenarios
Scenario 1: International Online Shopping
You are a U.S. women's size 8 buying shoes from a German website.
U.S. women's 8 = EU 41 = U.K. 6 = Japan 25.5 cm
Order EU size 41. But check the brand's size chart. Some European brands run narrow. If you have wide feet, consider going up to EU 42.
Scenario 2: Veterinary Visit
Your 8-year-old Golden Retriever (large breed, 75 lbs) is due for a wellness exam.
AKC age: 60 human years. Your dog is a senior (large breeds become senior at 8). The AKC recommends twice-yearly wellness exams for senior dogs. Blood work should include senior panel (kidney function, liver enzymes, thyroid).
Scenario 3: Recipe Conversion
A European recipe calls for 200 mL of milk. You have U.S. measuring cups.
200 mL / 236.588 = 0.845 cups. That is approximately 3/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon. Or use 200 mL directly if you have a metric measuring cup.
Scenario 4: Medical Height Recording
You are 5 feet 11 inches tall and need to fill out a medical form that asks for centimeters.
5 x 12 + 11 = 71 inches. 71 x 2.54 = 180.3 cm. Enter 180 cm (most forms round to the nearest centimeter).
Common Mistakes
1. Using the 7x rule for dog age. The 7x rule is outdated and inaccurate. A 1-year-old dog is equivalent to a 15-year-old human, not a 7-year-old. Use the AKC size-adjusted formula for accurate results.
2. Forgetting that EU shoe sizes are not standardized. A size 43 in one brand may fit differently from a size 43 in another. Always check the brand-specific size chart. Japanese sizing (foot length in cm) is the most reliable.
3. Mixing up U.S. and U.K. shoe sizes. U.K. sizes are typically 1 size smaller than U.S. for men and 2 sizes smaller for women. A U.S. men's 10 is a U.K. 9. A U.S. women's 8 is a U.K. 6.
4. Using approximate conversion factors for critical measurements. 1 inch = 2.54 cm is exact. But 1 pound = 0.45 kg is approximate (exact: 0.453592). For cooking, approximations are fine. For engineering or medical use, use exact factors.
5. Not accounting for breed size in dog age. A 10-year-old Chihuahua is 56 in human years (mature adult). A 10-year-old Great Dane is 80 (geriatric). Using the same formula for both leads to wrong care decisions.

People Also Ask
How do I convert my height from feet and inches to centimeters?
Multiply total inches by 2.54. For 5 feet 10 inches: 5 x 12 + 10 = 70 inches. 70 x 2.54 = 177.8 cm. To convert back, divide centimeters by 2.54 to get total inches, then divide by 12 for feet and use the remainder for inches. Use our Height Converter for instant results.
How do I convert shoe sizes between U.S., EU, and U.K.?
U.S. men's to U.K.: subtract 1. U.S. women's to U.K.: subtract 2. U.S. men's to EU: add approximately 33-34. U.S. women's to EU: add approximately 31-32. Japanese sizing uses foot length in centimeters and is the most reliable. Always check brand-specific size charts. Use our Shoe Size Converter for instant results.
How do I calculate my dog's age in human years?
Use the AKC formula: Year 1 = 15 human years, Year 2 adds 9 (cumulative 24), then add 4 to 7 years per dog year depending on size (4 for small, 7 for giant). A 7-year-old small dog is 44. A 7-year-old giant breed is 59. The old "multiply by 7" rule is inaccurate. Use our Dog Age Calculator for instant results.
How many milliliters are in a cup?
1 U.S. cup = 236.588 mL (commonly rounded to 237 mL). 1 metric cup = 250 mL. 1 U.K. cup = 284 mL. When following recipes, verify which cup measurement the recipe uses. Use our Cooking Converter for recipe conversions.
