What This Calculator Does
You are planning a 350-mile road trip from Chicago to St. Louis with a friend. Your car gets 28 MPG. Gas is $4.15 per gallon. There are tolls on the Indiana and Illinois tollways. You will need parking downtown and lunch on the road. How much will the whole trip cost, and what does each person owe? This calculator adds up every component: fuel, tolls, wear and tear on your vehicle, parking, food, and lodging, then splits the total among passengers.

How the Calculation Works
The total trip cost is the sum of six categories. Each is calculated independently.
Fuel Cost = (Distance / MPG) x Gas Price
EV Fuel Cost = (Distance / mi per kWh) x Electricity Rate
Toll Cost = Distance x Toll Rate per Mile + Fixed Tolls
Wear & Tear = Distance x Maintenance Rate per Mile
Total = Fuel + Tolls + Wear & Tear + Parking + Food + Lodging
Cost per Person = Total / Passengers
Fuel cost divides total distance by your MPG to find gallons consumed, then multiplies by the gas price. For EVs, it divides distance by miles per kWh and multiplies by the electricity rate. Tolls are either a per-mile rate plus a fixed fee (for preset toll types) or a custom one-way amount that doubles for round trips. Wear and tear multiplies distance by a per-mile rate that covers depreciation, tires, oil changes, and other maintenance. Parking, food, and lodging are flat dollar amounts you enter. The total is divided by the number of passengers for the per-person cost.
For the Chicago to St. Louis example: 350 miles one way, 700 miles round trip. Fuel: 700 / 28 x $4.15 = $103.75. Tolls (medium preset, 10 cents/mile): 700 x $0.10 + $4 = $74. How to Use the Calculator
- Enter your one-way trip distance and select miles or kilometers.
- Toggle round trip if you are driving back. The distance and tolls will double automatically.
- Select a vehicle preset or enter your MPG and gas price manually. For EVs, enter efficiency in mi/kWh and electricity rate.
- Set the wear and tear rate. The default of 7 cents per mile covers typical variable costs. The IRS rate of 70 cents includes all ownership costs.

Example 1: Weekend Getaway for Two
Marcus and his girlfriend drive 220 miles round trip from Boston to a bed and breakfast in Vermont. Their sedan gets 30 MPG. Gas is $4.15 per gallon. Tolls on the Massachusetts Turnpike round trip are about $13.60 (custom tolls). Parking is free at the B&B. Food budget is $80 for the weekend. Lodging is $180 per night for 2 nights, $360 total. Wear and tear: $128. Parking at Disney: $30. Food: $120. Total driving cost: $508.91, or $127.23 per person. Assuming 70% home charging and 30% fast charging: home energy is 700 / 3.5 = 200 kWh x $0.16 = $32. Fast charging is 300 / 3.5 = 85.7 kWh x $0.42 = $36. Total electricity: $68. Tolls (low): $50. Wear and tear at 4 cents per mile (EVs have lower maintenance): $40. Food: $25. Total: $183. The same trip in a 28 MPG gas car would cost $148.21 in fuel alone at $4.15 per gallon. - Forgetting wear and tear: Fuel is only part of the cost. Tires, oil changes, brake pads, and depreciation add up. The IRS estimates total vehicle costs at 70 cents per mile for 2026.
