What Ovulation Is and Why Timing Matters

Ovulation is the release of a mature egg from an ovary. The egg survives for 12 to 24 hours after release. Sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to 5 days. This means the fertile window is the 5 days before ovulation plus the day of ovulation itself: a 6-day window.

Research from the NIH and NIEHS (Wilcox et al., NEJM 1995) found that day-specific conception probabilities are:

  • 5 days before ovulation: about 10%
  • 2 days before ovulation: about 27%

The Ovulation Calculation Formula

The key insight is that the luteal phase (the time from ovulation to your next period) is relatively constant at about 14 days, with a normal range of 12 to 14 days. The follicular phase (from your period to ovulation) is what varies.

Ovulation day = Cycle length minus 14 days

If your cycles are irregular, the calendar method alone is unreliable. A 24-day cycle one month and a 35-day cycle the next means your ovulation day shifts by more than a week. In that case, you need to track biological signs (LH, BBT, mucus) rather than rely on the calendar.

How to Confirm Ovulation

The calendar formula gives you a prediction. To confirm that ovulation actually happened, you can use three methods.

LH Surge Tests (Ovulation Predictor Kits)

The luteinizing hormone surge begins about 32 to 36 hours before ovulation and peaks about 10 to 12 hours before. After a positive LH test, ovulation usually occurs within 24 to 36 hours.

LH tests predict ovulation before it happens. They are the most useful tool for timing intercourse or insemination. Start testing about 3 to 4 days before your expected ovulation day based on the calendar formula.

Basal Body Temperature (BBT)

Your resting body temperature rises 0.3 to 0.5 degrees Celsius (0.5 to 1.0 degrees Fahrenheit) after ovulation, driven by progesterone. The rise is sustained for about 12 to 14 days until your next period (or longer if you are pregnant).

BBT confirms ovulation after it has already happened. It cannot predict it in advance. The most fertile days are the 2 to 3 days before the temperature rise. A BBT elevation that persists for 18 or more days is an early sign of pregnancy.

Typical pre-ovulation oral BBT: 96 to 98 degrees Fahrenheit. Post-ovulation: 97 to 99 degrees Fahrenheit.

Cervical Mucus Monitoring

Fertile cervical mucus becomes clear, slippery, and stretchy (like raw egg whites) in the days before ovulation. This mucus helps sperm survive and travel. After ovulation, mucus becomes thick and sticky or disappears.

The mucus method is observable without any equipment. The "peak type" mucus typically appears for about 6 days per cycle. Combined with LH tests and BBT, it creates a highly accurate picture of your fertile window.

Example 1: The 28-Day Cycle

Aisha has a regular 28-day cycle. Her last period started on September 1.

Ovulation day: 28 minus 14 = day 14, which is September 14. Fertile window: September 9 to September 14 (5 days before plus ovulation day). Best days for conception: September 12, 13, and 14.

She starts LH tests on September 10 (cycle day 10). She gets a positive on September 13 at 8 AM. Ovulation likely occurs by September 14 evening. Her BBT rises from 97.4 to 98.1 on September 15 and stays elevated, confirming ovulation occurred on September 14.

Example 2: The Irregular Cycle

Priya has cycles ranging from 26 to 35 days. The calendar method would predict ovulation somewhere between day 12 and day 21, which is too wide a window to be useful.

Instead, she tracks cervical mucus starting on day 8. On day 15, she notices clear, slippery mucus. She takes an LH test and gets a positive. Ovulation is likely within 24 to 36 hours, around day 16 or 17.

Her next period starts 14 days after ovulation, confirming a 30 to 31 day cycle that month. Without the biological tracking, she would have been guessing across a 9-day range.

Due Date Calculation from Ovulation

If you know your ovulation date, you can calculate your due date more accurately than the standard method. Naegele's rule adds 280 days to the first day of your last period, assuming a 28-day cycle with ovulation on day 14.

If you know your actual ovulation date:

Due date = Ovulation date + 266 days

This is more accurate for women with cycles that are not 28 days. ACOG notes that only about half of women accurately recall their LMP, and about 40% have their due date adjusted by a first-trimester ultrasound. The first-trimester ultrasound remains the most reliable dating method.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
