The MET Formula for Walking Calories

How Incline Changes the Burn
Walking uphill increases the energy cost significantly. The ACSM walking metabolic equation accounts for grade:
VO2 (mL/kg/min) = (0.1 x speed in m/min) + (1.8 x speed x grade) + 3.5
MET = VO2 / 3.5

The 10,000 Steps Question
The 10,000-steps-per-day target originated as a 1960s Japanese marketing campaign for a pedometer called the Manpo-kei (which translates to "10,000 steps meter"). It was not based on science. But recent research has validated it as a reasonable target.
