You are standing in a dealership looking at two versions of the same car. One runs on gas. One runs on a battery. The gas version costs $46,000. The electric version costs $53,000. The salesperson says you will save thousands on fuel. Is that true in 2026?

The answer depends almost entirely on where you charge and how much you drive. Home charging is cheap. Public fast charging is not. And the federal EV tax credit that used to knock $7,500 off the price is gone. This guide breaks down the real 2026 cost math so you can make the call with actual numbers.

The 2026 Fuel Price Picture

Gas prices in 2026 have been volatile. According to AAA, the national average for regular unleaded hit $4.14 per gallon over Labor Day weekend. The EIA reported a weekly average of $4.07 per gallon as of August 31, 2026. The year-to-date average through August was about $3.75 per gallon.

Residential electricity is more stable. The EIA reported a national average residential rate of 18.34 cents per kWh in June 2026. State averages vary wildly, from about 13 cents in Nevada to over 52 cents in Hawaii.

The key comparison is cost per mile, not cost per gallon or per kWh. A gallon of gas and a kilowatt-hour of electricity are not comparable units. You need to convert both to cost per mile.

How to Calculate Cost per Mile

For a gas car:

Cost per mile = Price per gallon / Miles per gallon

For an EV:

Cost per mile = Price per kWh / Miles per kWh

A typical EV gets about 3.5 miles per kWh. A typical gas car gets about 30 MPG combined.

Using 2026 national averages:

  • Gas at $4.07 per gallon, 30 MPG: $4.07 / 30 = $0.136 per mile (13.6 cents)
  • EV at 18.34 cents per kWh, 3.5 mi/kWh: $0.1834 / 3.5 = $0.052 per mile (5.2 cents)

The Federal EV Tax Credit Is Gone

This is the biggest change for 2026 buyers. The Clean Vehicle Credit (up to $7,500 for new EVs and $4,000 for used EVs) expired for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act eliminated the credit entirely.

If you did not have a binding written contract and payment on or before September 30, 2025, you get no federal credit on a 2026 EV purchase. The only surviving federal EV incentive is the Section 30C home charger credit, which covers 30% of equipment cost up to $1,000 per charging port. But that credit expires after June 30, 2026.

The Hidden Cost: EV Registration Fees

41 states now charge an extra annual registration fee for EVs to replace lost gas tax revenue. The median fee is about $145 per year. The range goes from $50 in Hawaii to $270 in New Jersey. Michigan charges $267. Pennsylvania charges $250. Washington charges $225.

This fee directly reduces your fuel savings. If you save $1,008 per year on fuel but pay a $200 EV registration fee, your net savings drop to $808.

Home Charging vs Public Fast Charging

This is where the EV cost advantage can disappear. Public DC fast charging is far more expensive than home charging.

If you charge exclusively at public DC fast chargers, your cost per mile is about 12 to 16 cents. That is comparable to or even more expensive than a 30 MPG gas car at $4.07 per gallon (13.6 cents per mile). An efficient hybrid getting 45 MPG costs about 9 cents per mile, which beats DC fast charging.

The EV fuel savings only materialize if you charge at home most of the time.

Example 1: The Daily Commuter

Anna drives 35 miles each way to work, 5 days a week. That is 350 miles per week, about 18,200 miles per year. She has a garage with a Level 2 charger and pays 18 cents per kWh for electricity. She is comparing a 30 MPG gas sedan against an EV that gets 3.5 miles per kWh.

Gas cost per year: 18,200 / 30 x $4.07 = $2,469 EV home charging cost per year: 18,200 / 3.5 x $0.18 = $936 Annual fuel savings: $1,533

She lives in Washington state, where the EV registration fee is $225 per year. Net savings: $1,308 per year.

The EV she wants costs $7,000 more than the gas version. At $1,308 per year in savings, the payback period is about 5.4 years. She plans to keep the car for 8 years, so the EV comes out ahead by about $3,464 over the life of the car.

Example 2: The Apartment Dweller

Carlos rents an apartment with no home charging. He drives 12,000 miles per year and would rely entirely on public DC fast charging at about 45 cents per kWh.

Gas cost per year (30 MPG): 12,000 / 30 x $4.07 = $1,628 EV DC fast charge cost per year: 12,000 / 3.5 x $0.45 = $1,543

Annual fuel savings: $85. He lives in Michigan, where the EV fee is $267. Net cost: he loses $182 per year compared to gas. The EV makes no financial sense for his situation unless he values the environmental benefit or the driving experience enough to pay for it.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

1. Assuming public charging is as cheap as home charging. It is not. DC fast charging can cost 2 to 3 times more per mile than home charging. If you cannot charge at home, the EV fuel savings may not exist.

2. Forgetting the EV registration fee. In some states it exceeds $250 per year. That is real money that comes off your fuel savings.
